Beyond the Holidays: Sustaining Impact Throughout the Year

By: Darcy Addison, Partner and Advisor

As we step into a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. (Get to the gym more, anyone?) But what if we set intentions for how we show up in our community too? The holidays typically bring a surge of generosity – a heartfelt desire to give back. That spirit is wonderful! Yet we need to remember that nonprofits need our support throughout the year. Their vital work doesn’t end on December 31st.

At Grant Philanthropic Advisors, we are fortunate to work with donors and nonprofits who strive to make a difference every day. Nonprofit missions are year-round endeavors, and to be truly effective, donor support must be just as consistent.

As the Greater Chicago Food Depository aptly states:

“Hunger is a year-round problem that touches every community… our community thrives when we show up consistently throughout the year.”

This year, we invite you to move beyond the “seasonal rush” and embrace strategies that provide sustainable, impactful support throughout 2026.

1. The Power of Predictability

The Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) notes that the most impactful donors prioritize “predictable funding.” When we move away from one-off year-end gifts and toward a recurring monthly donation, we provide nonprofits with operational stability. This allows leaders to focus on long-term strategy rather than the constant “hamster wheel” of fundraising. CEP stresses in their latest study that “68% (of nonprofits) report that the current context has a negative ability to carry out their work.” (“Mounting Pressure”). Let’s help nonprofits focus on their mission –  by offering steady funding.

2. Consistency Over Intensity

Volunteering is one of the most powerful gifts you can offer, but its value multiplies when it is consistent. While holiday opportunities are abundant, committing to a regular schedule – even a few hours a month – allows you to become truly integrated into an organization’s work. Predictable hands on deck allow nonprofits to plan larger, more complex projects with confidence. Think back to your middle-school service hours – there’s a reason they were scheduled well in advance – your presence matters!

3. Amplifying the Mission

According to the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP), effective giving involves using your voice as much as your wallet. They emphasize that donors should engage in “advocacy and awareness-building” as a core pillar of their philanthropy. You can do this by:

  • Highlighting favorites: Sharing an organization’s impact on social media.
  • Inviting others: Bringing friends or colleagues to events the nonprofit is hosting.
  • Opening doors: Introducing the mission to your network creates a ripple effect of generosity.

The joy of giving isn’t confined to the Holiday season; it is a discipline that enriches our lives and our communities all year long. By offering consistent time, recurring financial support, and active advocacy, we provide the sustained momentum that allows nonprofits to truly thrive. Let’s make 2026 a year of sustained impact – supporting the organizations that build a better world, every single day.

About Grant Philanthropic Advisors:
We’re an independent firm helping clients to focus and maximize their philanthropy—in turn, strengthening the fabric of our communities. Founded in 2019, we help donors move from responsive patterns of giving by assisting clients to identify values and become more strategic in their philanthropy. Our goal is to help donors to become more effective as change-makers. We work with foundations (large and small staff teams), donor advised fund holders, multi generational families, individuals, philanthropy supporting organizations and corporations to design philanthropic strategies.
